Buffy

Angel #3

Angel #3 comic reviewThe third issue of Angel teases us with what our hero’s future will look like on this new rebooted timeline, offers him a bit of context to the villain he’s fighting who is targeting victims through social media, and introduces the handsome stranger to Winifred Burkle. It’s the last of these which is most interesting, as Angel saves Fred from a demon-possessed attacker with the help of a balloon filled with holy water.

As when she was originally introduced on the television show, Fred doesn’t appear to be all there. However, her understanding of math and symbols are intact (along with her random mumbling which turn out to be on point as often as not), and she does prove helpful in sending Angel on to the next stage of his journey.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer #6

Buffy the Vampire Slayer #6 comic reviewFor those of us who know what happened the first time around, there is some interesting foreshadowing the latest issue of the rebooted Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The issue focuses on Buffy and Willow working together to complete to a quest to earn a soul tie to save Xander Harris from life as a vampire. Picking up more than halfway through the quest helps move the issue along. This path includes some physical obstacles for the pair, and an unexpected travelling companion, as well as a hard choice that may lay the initial ground for Dark Willow in the future.

For now it appears that Xander is safe, but at what cost to Willow? And how will the soul tie bind them together? I’m sure there will be plenty of time to delve into this deeper in the coming issues.

Angel #2

Angel #2 comic reviewThere are several points of interest in the second issue of Angel, even if the full story remains hidden and a bit fractured and still out of focus.

Following the death of his friend, Angel is back in hero mode searching for answers. It’s a good thing too since Angel #2 introduces one of my favorite characters from the Buffyverse as Winifred Burkle isn’t found in Pylea but a psychiatric ward in Sunnydale. The much earlier introduction of Fred is an intriguing change which will be interesting to see play out.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer #5

Buffy the Vampire Slayer #5 comic reviewXander Harris is a vampire. However, their may still be hope for one of the original Scoobies as Giles comes up with a possible way to save their friend’s soul before the demon takes over completely. With Xander being turned within the first four issues of the new series we definitely see an even larger break with the original Buffy the Vampire Slayer continuity. At this point writer Jordie Bellaire and artist Dan Mora have me unsure just how this will turn out. While this last-second, available through Anya‘s magic shop, offers hope, I do wonder just what the creators of the new Buffy have in mind for Xander as the story unfolds.

Angel #1

Angel #1 comic reviewThe first issue of Angel (discounting the zero issue, which was more of a tease about Angel‘s time before heading to Sunnydale) feels a bit disconnected with the new Buffyverse, making it hard to judge where exactly it fits in the greater scheme of things. Despite the character’s first appearance being in the current BOOM! Studios Buffy the Vampire Slayer comic, the storyline here follows a completely different path.
