The U.S. Army wants Buffy!? Armageddon makes for strange bedfellows as Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season Ten kicks off with a new arc featuring the return of some fan-favorite characters when Satsu comes to town dropping names like Riley Finn to recruit Buffy to help stop the number of demons being brought into our world to wreak havoc. The first job the Army has for our vampire slayer and her blondey bear boyfriend? To help recruit vampires to their cause. Did I mention that the vampires include Harmony and Vicki?

Following the debate between Buffy and Satsu of slayers joining the army (immediately preceding by the awkwardness of Buffy’s bisexual encounter showing up on her doorstep) the issue focuses on the challenges of Buffy and Spike dealing with the new vampire alliance who not only demand the pair of heroes defeat their champions in trial by combat but also spend time attempting to undermine the couple’s new-found bliss.

There are two battles happening simultaneously in Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season Ten #15. The first involves Buffy and the Scoobies battling the ancient demon Archaeus whose bloodline runs through Spike, and the second involves the battle within Buffy’s boyfriend’s brain as Archaeus’ pull brings out the bloodthirsty nature of William the Bloody and sicks it on Buffy and her friends.

Mind-controlled for half the story, Spike plays a big role in the issue that allows the vampire with a soul to prove his worth and fight off his darker nature. Xander also shows up for some quick thinking in the middle of the battle and later to put a rest to the awkwardness with Dawn which the pair have struggled with since the beginning of the season.

The issue ends with the team regrouping after a marginal victory without hope of defeating the demon alone and teasing the first big crossover event since Angel‘s wacky Twilight adventure. A Buffy, Angel, and Spike team-up? Okay, that sounds like some serious fun. Worth a look.

To find Spike‘s connection with the vampire whose recent kills Spike has been witnessing in his dreams Buffy takes a tour of her lover’s subconscious. Although I expected the answer to Spike’s memories of the killings to be a callback to “Somnambulist,” the truth is the exact opposite. In this case Spike isn’t viewing the killings of someone he sired but the vampire who sired his entire line beginning with The Master.

With the introduction of Archaeus the latest season of Buffy begins delving into the subject of siring vampires and introduces the idea of an ancient creature such as Archaeus leaving a piece of himself, connecting him to every vampire of his line.

Along with the introduction of the new big bad, Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season Ten #14 gives us Buffy snooping through Spike’s mind finding both beauty and horror before confronting Archaeus whose connection to Spike makes him a serious threat to Buffy in more ways than one. Worth a look.
