“Into each generation a Slayer is born.”

Buffy - Welcome to the Hellmouth / The Harvest

March 10, 1997. Has it really been that long? Acknowledging the failed movie of the same name, but quickly carving out a name for itself, Buffy the Vampire Slayer brought new life the the horror genre by casting Sarah Michelle Gellar as the chosen Vampire Slayer Buffy Summers. With its non-traditional heroine and unique dialogue, peppered with pop-culture references and dubbed Buffy Slang by fans, the show immediately became a cult hit lasting seven years and spawning a spin-off and multiple comic book series.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season Ten #27

Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season Ten #27With a super-powered D’Hoffryn unmasked as the true big bad of the season, Season Ten’s final arc continues with infighting among Buffy and the Scoobies as there never seems to be enough blame in this issue for the choices each characters has made.

Despite “Hush” and the introduction of Tara, Season Four is the weakest of Buffy the Vampire Slayer‘s seven seasons on television. Giving the characters enough space to grow, and grow apart, eventually led to harsh words and incriminations amongst the group (although that time it needed a push by Spike to get things started).

In much the same matter events unfold here with the Scooby Gang at each other’s throats. And, I’d suspect, things will be solved in near identical fashion as the group will come together for a big group hug and final battle before the last minute.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season Ten #26

Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season Ten #26While Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season Ten #26 offers a major turning point in the season in revealing the identity of this season’s big bad, it’s not the most enjoyable aspect of the comic. Trapped in a hell dimension with no way home (without unleashing untold horrors on their loved ones), Xander and Dawn make the best of their surroundings. Befriending the local monsters, Xander puts his contractor experience to work winning over the populace in unexpected (and humorous) ways.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season Ten #25

Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season Ten #25“In Pieces on the Ground” concludes with a journey to a Hell dimension, the departure of two major supporting characters, the truth about ghost Anya, the end of the threat posed by the Mistress and the Soul Glutton, and foreshadowing for new trouble on Buffy‘s horizon.

It all begins with an expanding portal to a Hell dimension that Willow cannot close. In fact, the only one able to do that duty is Dawn, but only from the other side where her powers as the Key wouldn’t be limited as they are on Earth. Going with her, Buffy, Giles, Spike, Willow, Xander, and Andrew are prepared to fight an entire dimension of Hell beasts (which proves not necessary when Dawn turns their god to ash with a simple thought).

Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season Ten #23

Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season Ten #23The endless grind of fighting back monsters from other dimensions begins to wear on everyone, especially now that Willow is working with the military (a situation Buffy continues to have problems with). Relying more and more on the Magic Council to fight these battles, Buffy is convinced to adding to their power using the Vampyr tome (likely foreshadowing all new kinds of trouble for the Slayer and her friends down the line).

The other major piece of Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season Ten #23 deals with Andrew and the recent hauntings of ghost Jonathan. Approached by the Sculptor, who plays on the young man’s guilt, Jonathan is offered a trade: steal Buffy’s Scythe in exchange for the demon crafting Jonathan a new living body. Strongly tempted by the offer, Andrew continues to grow as a character refusing to make new mistakes to make up for his old ones.
