Black Canary

Green Arrow #10

Green Arrow #10Taking place on the ocean floor, Green Arrow #10 sends Green Arrow, Black Canary, and Diggle aboard the maiden voyage of the Trans-Pacific Railway known as the Empire Express where they find evidence of drug smuggling and murder.

Stowed away aboard the train, the trio work to find the Ninth Circle assassin before he can complete his assignment. Too late to prevent the murder, our heroes also have to deal with an entire train full of passengers and armed guards who wrongly assumed the colorfully-clad vigilantes are the assassins.

Green Arrow #8

Green Arrow #8Green Arrow may be trapped on an island in the middle of the nowhere (again), but at least this time he isn’t alone. Green Arrow #8 begins a new story arc with Ollie, Dinah, and Diggle on a deserted island (which it turns out isn’t exactly deserted).

While Diggle is taken prisoner by a mechanical bear and dragged to underground lair, Ollie and Dinah reconnect and, thanks to their picturesque surroundings, are given the opportunity to have the kind of vacation neither hero would ever likely agree to. As to just who, and what, are on the island with them, we’ll have to await and see as “Island of Scars” plays out. Now that our heroes are back together, and have finished their brief respite, it’s time to get back to work.

Batgirl and the Birds of Prey #2

Batgirl and the Birds of Prey #2The new threesome of Batgirl, Black Canary, and the Huntress put aside their differences and work together to learn more about the new hacker who has adopted Babs’ old moniker of Oracle. For Batgirl this means a lecture from her father (who in new DCU following DC Rebith apparently doesn’t know the identity of the young redhead under the cowl).

After getting Huntress to put aside her more murderous tendencies the group begins to work fairly well together. Saving a member of the local mafia at least gives the woman a place to start, but it looks like it will be quite some time before they uncover just who the new Oracle is and what they want.

Batgirl and the Birds of Prey #1

Batgirl and the Birds of Prey #1Following the events of Batgirl and the Birds of Prey: Rebirth #1, Batgirl and Black Canary chase down Huntress whose vengeance over mobsters has criss-crossed their search into the new criminal Oracle. The comic’s events turn the adversaries into reluctant partners in the search for both Oracle and Fenice (whose snake soldiers are likely to give the gals trouble over the next few issues).

I really wanted to like this issue but there’s simply too much that doesn’t work for me starting with the art of Claire Roe and ending with the implausibly quick turnaround for Babs and Dinah to align themselves with a murderer. Throw in the fact that apparently none of their secret identities is actually secret and the comic’s lead arc is off to a very shaky start.

Green Arrow #4

Green Arrow #4Continuing the opening arc of the new series, Green Arrow‘s long road back to reclaim what was taken from him leads to an encounter with John Diggle. While the initial encounter is more than a little frosty, the old allies quickly put past issues behind them to work together to take down the Ninth Circle who have kidnapped the snooping Black Canary to force Green Arrow to show himself (setting up next issue’s suicidal two-man rescue operation).

It wouldn’t be my first choice to demote Black Canary to girl hostage in the comic (maybe she’ll free herself before Ollie and Diggle arrive?). I would have preferred Ollie and Diana working together to save Diggle (or someone else), but Dinah’s capture does add extra incentive for Ollie’s upcoming confrontation with Shado and Emiko.
