Batman ’66 #14

Batman '66 #14Although he never actually appeared on the 60s television show, there’s little doubt such a creation like the Batrobot (which we’ve seen in various forms over the years in different media such as most recently in Batman: The Brave and the Bold) would be right at home in the campy confines of this version of Gotham City.

In an issue that instructs the reader about advances in technology and their limits, Batman ’66 #14 features Batman creating a giant Batrobot to police the city giving the Dark Knight Detective and Robin a vacation. Despite the early successes the robot taking down the likes of Clock King, Louie Lilac, and the Archer, the robots limitations are revealed when it fails to handle the team-up of the illogical combination of the Joker and the Riddler. It looks like Batman’s job is safe for the time being.

Batman ’66 #13

Batman '66 #13Collecting two rather than the usual three issues of the digital series (meaning there’s no back-up story following the two-part tale this month), Batman ’66 #13 features the Dynamic Duo taking on on Hollywood when a dark and grim television show begins depicting the Dark Knight Detective in a way that begins to affect how both criminals and law-abiding citizens view Batman and Robin.

Reversing the idea of the 60s television show helping to lighten-up Batman (with the help of the Comics Code) from his grimmer roots, the story has a certain flair although I don’t expect “Bat-Business” to actually catch on as a favorite catch phrase. The first-half of the story works better me than the wrap-up as the Hollywood producer turns out to be your typical Batman villain (attempting to kill the Dynamic Duo live on-camera).

Batman - Zelda the Great

In honor of Batman‘s 75th Anniversary we continue to look back at the more memorable moments of the Dark Knight Detective on the big and small screen. It’s interesting to note that Catwoman wasn’t the first female villain to battle the Dynamic Duo on the 1966 Batman TV-series starring Adam West as Batman and Burt Ward as Robin. The return of the April Fool’s Day brings the return of an unknown thief who robs Gotham City’s banks of exactly $100,000 for the third year in a row. With no leads other than the robber’s bullet proof vest and odd fibers left at the scene, Batman decides to plant a fake story in the newspaper that the stolen money was counterfeit in hopes of drawing out the culprit to make another robbery attempt.

Batman - Rats Like Cheese

In honor of Batman‘s 75th Anniversary we continue to look back at the more memorable moments on the big and small screen. The seventh and eighth episodes of 1966 Batman TV-series starring Adam West as Batman and Burt Ward as Robin introduced Mr. Freeze (George Sanders) for the first time. Te show used the classic origin of the criminal scientist Mr. Zero (whose renaming here stuck in comics as well) as an evil scientist whose lab accident caused the cold-blooded scientist to need to wear a cryogenic suit in order to survive. In a twist, the show made Batman responsible for the accident (at least in Freeze’s mind). As with the Arnold Schwarzenegger version of the character in Batman & Robin, this version is also obsessed with stealing diamonds.

Batman ’66 Meets The Green Hornet #2

Batman '66 Meets The Green Hornet #2The six-issue mini-series continues here as the two duos of crime fighters are both able to extract themselves from the death trap laid by General Gumm who all were in danger of losing their heads after being glued to the top of a speeding train. In the ensuing confrontation the Green Hornet decides to play dirty and knock out the Dynamic Duo rather than reveal the truth that he and Kato are actually heroes only pretending to be criminals.

As General Gumm isn’t strong enough to carry the series on his own, Batman ’66 Meets The Green Hornet #2 brings in the Joker to help even out the battle between good and evil, although how long the pair can put up with each other is yet to be seen.
