Collecting the entire run of Atomic Robo and The Savage Sword of Dr. Dinosaur the latest trade paperback from writer Brian Clevinger and artist Scott Wegener pits the atomic-powered science-adventurer against his most insane enemy. Did I mention it’s awesome?!

While avoiding the fallout of someone branding him as a nuclear terrorist, Atomic Robo sets out on a simple mission in the jungles Venezuela near a secret Nazi base which becomes much more complicated when he discovers an underground civilization of rock monsters with laser faces along with Dr. Dinosuar and his plan to detonate a ridiculous Time Bomb to bring back the age of the dinosaurs.

Atomic Robo: The Knights of the Golden Circle #1

Atomic Robo: The Knights of the Golden Circle #1If you’re an atomic-powered robotic scientific-adventurer lost 140 some years in the past in the middle of the Old West the smart thing to do would be to lay low. Following the events of Atomic Robo and The Savage Sword of Dr. Dinosaur that’s just what our hero has been doing for more than a decade, but when an outlaw gang shoots an old-timer within earshot of Atomic Robo, propriety be damned.

Writer Brian Clevinger and artist Scott Wegener’s latest adventure for our scientific adventurer is certainly a doozy. Whether you want to call him the robot with no name or Ironhide, the first issue of the latest five-issue mini-series sets up two enemies for Atomic Robo to face: the Butcher Boys and history itself to which our hero must try not make any big changes. Throw in a wild card like Doc Holiday and there’s no telling what might happen next.

It didn’t take long to sell me on the new series, and even after receiving a free digital review copy of the comic I gladly spent the money to grab a print copy. Giddyap Robo, I’m ready to ride! Worth a look.

Atomic Robo and The Savage Sword of Dr. Dinosaur #5

Atomic Robo and The Savage Sword of Dr. Dinosaur #5Dr. Dinosaur was right! Okay, he wasn’t actually right. He is an insane dinosaur scientist after all. The final issue of Atomic Robo and The Savage Sword of Dr. Dinosaur #5 will end Atomic Robo‘s battle with his arch-nemesis in the underground caves where Dr. Dinosaur has enslaved a rock-creature army and created a nuclear-powered time bomb to destroy all trace of humanity. And, here’s the thing, it goes off!

Filled with more war of words between the action scientist and the deranged reptile, the final issue of the series ends on a suprising note. Unable to prevent Dr. Dinosaur from exploding his absurd creation, Atomic Robo gets his colleagues to safety but is unable to remove himself from the center of the blast. Although it doesn’t destroy all history of mankind, Dr. Dinosaur’s time bomb does actually shoot Atomic Robo into the past. So he was right! Not really! But sort of!

The issue also sees Jenkins turn the tables on Majestic, but, just as Atomic Robo’s story ends on a cliffhanger, we’re left to wonder just what happened after the explosion at Tesladyne. Must-read.

Atomic Robo and The Savage Sword of Dr. Dinosaur #4

Atomic Robo and The Savage Sword of Dr. Dinosaur #4With Tesladyne under full-scale attack based on the convincing frame job by Majestic 12 to present Atomic Robo and the company as nuclear terrorists, Robo and his action scientists have their own hands full with Dr. Dinosuar, not one but two armies of magma creatures, and the deranged dinosaur’s rebuilt Time-Bomb which he believes will destroy the last 65 million years.

Although much of the issue deals with the scientists both joining an army in Hollow Earth and fighting for control of Tesladyne, Atomic Robo and The Savage Sword of Dr. Dinosaur #4 also brings our hero and villain back together for some insane, and truly wonderful, banter.

With only a single issue left, Jenkins captured and Tesladyne in the hands of their enemies, and Dr. Dinosaur detonating his absurd creation, there’s still quite a bit of ground to cover to find out just how Atomic Robo and his friends defeat his supremely-awesome arch-nemesis and get out of this one. Best of the week.

Top 10 Comic Issues of 2013

top-10-comic-issues-of-2013

Here’s my look back at the ten best single comic issues from the past year. Including ongoing series, one-shots, and mini-series, the only limitations I put on this list was that the comic had to have been released in 2013 (no reprints) and I limited myself to only a single issue from any one title. Because I was focusing on standout issues rather than consistently strong comics every month several of my favorite series missed the cut, but, if time permits, I may work up my regular list of best comic series of the past year as well.
