While still bonkers, the conclusion of G-Dog‘s story isn’t a joyous as Astro City #47. How could it be given the swerve our hero was given at the end of the last issue? Astro City #48 is a beautiful and sweet story about a man and his dog as the days grow shorter and time finally catching up to the canine member of an unlikely pair who became one of the cutest heroes ever to grace the cover of a comic book.

Even with the end looming over the issue, there’s still plenty of fun to be had here in more adventures of our hero (including joining an all-animal super-team) and the thief continuing to grow as struggle to be the best man he can be.

With Astro City #47 writer Kurt Busiek and guest-artist Mike Norton introduce perhaps the most adorable Astro City hero ever. The latest issue is an origin story, but an unusual one. In the first page of the story introduced to a small-time thief and the cute Corgi he “borrows” as collateral to get the money owed to him as a friend. While he never gets the money, he does make a quick connection with the dog who will turn out to be man’s best friend.

Later, after stealing an amulet from a house full of super-hero memorabilia, our two characters find themselves combined into a half-man half-dog creature. While initially planning to use his good fortune to rob and pay back mobsters he owes, the influence of his dog Hank helps our protagonist find a new path and become the world’s most adorable super-hero G-Dog.

Introduced early in the current run of Astro City as part narrator and part guide, the true identity and agenda of the Broken Man has been in question. Tying back to the recent musical-history-inspired stories of Jazzbaby and Glamorax, Astro City #46 finally reveals the true origins of the Broken Man and his first contact with dark entity known as the Oubor.

Not only do we learn where the Broken Man came from, a truth that even he himself can’t come to admit, but also his reasoning for breaking the 4th wall and talking directly to the audience. Far more than just a guide through the history of Astro City’s music and heroes, the Broken Man needs our help.

I loved this issue! Even after years Astro City can still surprise me. With the single-issue story “The Cat Who Walked Through Walls,” Astro City #44 touches on a theme near and dear to my heart: animal heroes. In this case the animal is the pet cat of two Astro City heroines – Sunhawk and Nightingale who are completely unaware about what their pet does when they aren’t looking (other than try and knock dangerous substances off of tables and shelves).

Unaware of their cat’s power, or devilish intelligence, our heroes are completely oblivious to Kittyhawk tackling their case to stop the latest villainous plans of Popinjay on her own. Okay, she also relied on the help of another animal hero in Rocket Dog. Yes, I said Rocket Dog! Did I mention how much I love this comic?!
