After last year’s foray into magic and mysticism, Arrow returns to its roots for the Fifth Season opener. With all of his allies either dead or retired, Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell) is burning the candle at both ends working days as the new mayor of Star City and nights as the Green Arrow. While the recent seasons have created more and more powerful adversaries for Green Arrow to fight, necessitating building a bigger and better team, the season premiere gets back to basics with a street-level villain in Tobias Church (Chad L. Arrow - The Complete Fourth SeasonIn the show’s Fourth Season, Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell) is pulled out of retirement and returns to Star City to battle supernatural criminal Damien Darhk (Neal McDonough). Flashback tend to the supernatural as well as Ollie works to prevent soldiers from finding a mystical item hidden somewhere on the island.

While not the show’s strongest season, there is plenty to enjoy. Highlights include the multi-episode crossover with The Flash used to launch The CW’s new spin-off, the team struggling to deal with a death of their own, the appearance of Vixen (Megalyn Echikunwoke), Darhk kidnapping Oliver’s friends, John Constantine‘s (Matt Ryan) arrival in Star City, the introduction of Tom Amandes as both the Calculator and Felicity‘s (Emily Bett Rickards) father, and trust issues for Diggle and Oliver to work through.

Legends of Tomorrow - The Complete First SeasonBuilding on the DC TV Universe created in Arrow and The Flash, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow is a mixed bag. Cobbling together characters created for the show and others introduced on the on the other two shows as an unruly bunch of time travelers out to save the future, the show had more than few ups and downs during its First Season. Time Master Rip Hunter (Arthur Darvill) plucks a group of heroes and villains from modern day (rather than choose heroes from a wide swath of time which would have made more sense) to save his family and stop the villainous immortal Vandal Savage (Casper Crump) from conquering the world.

Jumping through time, the First Season did have its moments such as a bleak future for Star City and Ray Palmer (Brandon Routh) and Kendra (Ciara Renée) getting stranded in 1958, but also some clunkers such as the team’s stop in the Old West.

Supergirl - The Complete First SeasonCasting Melissa Benoist as Kara Zor-El, the First Season of Supergirl added Superman’s cousin to the DC television stable. Not as consistent as Arrow, and not as fun as The Flash, Supergirl had her growing pains in the First Season as Kara worked to balance her life as assistant to a demanding media mogul (Calista Flockhart) and working with a secret government agency to corral super-powered prisoners who escaped from a Kryptonian prison.

Highlights of the show’s First Season include a crossover with the Flash, Supergirl exposed to Red Krptonite and the Black Mercy, J’onn Jonzz‘s (David Harewood) history revealed, political upheaval at the DEO, the first appearance of the Toyman, and Supergirl’s struggle to defend the city without her powers.

Available on both Blu-ray and DVD, extras include deleted scenes, gag reel, and featurettes on Krypton, the Martian Manhunter, and Comic-Con.

Arrow - Schism

Just once I would like Arrow to end a season without Star City in flames. Is that too much to ask? “Schism” wraps up the season-long arc of Oliver Queen‘s (Stephen Amell) battle with Damien Darhk (Neal McDonough) for control of Star City. Despite his bunker being destroyed, Darkh reacquires A.R.G.U.S.‘ missle technology with plans to start a nuclear holocaust to wipe out all civilization on the planet. Without a plan, Oliver makes a plea to the city to prevent it from tearing itself apart its final hours. It’s that small kernel of hope which Green Arrow uses to turn the entire city against Darkh.
