The Machine may have been saved but it will take Finch (Michael Emerson) and his team the better part of an episode to work the kinks out of the system. “SNAFU” opens with a humorous scene involving The Machine’s inability to correctly identify people through its facial recognition software (allowing the actors to step in each other’s roles for a brief moment). Meanwhile, Reese (Jim Caviezel) and Fusco (Kevin Chapman) spend the episode chasing down numbers who aren’t actually in any danger. The real trouble, however, comes when Harold’s A.I. decides to classify Finch, Reese, and Root (Amy Acker) all as dangerous threats.

After an entire year off the air, Person of Interest finally returns for its final season. Picking up events on the same night immediately following the events of the Fourth Season’s finale, “B.S.O.D.” gives us Reese (Jim Caviezel), Finch (Michael Emerson), and Root (Amy Acker) all on the run from a city now completely controlled by Samaritan operatives. Although the spend little time together on-screen in the season premiere, it will take the efforts of all three members of the team to save what is left of The Machine and offer it a chance at rebirth.

The episode’s other lingering storyline concludes Control (Camryn Manheim) search into what Decima Technologies‘ machine is really after leading her to uncover a terrorist plot which Samaritan is not only hiding from the government but arranging in order to eliminate dangerous elements that threaten its version of a perfect world.

Pushing forward to what looks like it could be the show’s bleakest season finale yet “Asylum” offers three stories, each of which end badly for our heroes. Given the numbers of both Elias (Enrico Colantoni) and Dominic (Winston Duke), Reese (Jim Caviezel) attempts once again to stop a gang war from fully erupting only to find himself captured along with Elias and Fusco (Kevin Chapman) by the Brotherhood. Control (Camryn Manheim) gets her own subplot as, after finally realizing the truth about Samaritan, continues to root out the computer’s spies within her organization only to learn what Samaritan has planned. And after receiving a phone call confirming Shaw (Sarah Shahi) is still alive and a captive of Decima Technologies, Root (Amy Acker) and Finch (Michael Emerson) walk into a trap forcing The Machine into an impossible choice.
