Shōgun - Crimson Sky / A Dream of a Dream

The final two episodes of Shōgun focus on the choices of Mariko (Anna Sawai) and their aftermath. Having journeyed to Osaka, Mariko informs Ishido (Takehiro Hira) of her plans to return to  Lord Toranaga (Hiroyuki Sanada) the next day and take his vassals, and infant son, back with her. Putting Ishido in a no-win situation of either giving up his hostages or confirming that they are indeed hostages and unable to leave, he refuses her request having his men cut down her soldiers at the gate and advance on to Marko. This, of course, is exactly what Mariko was expecting and gives her the opportunity to commit seppuku for failing to meet her lord’s demands and achieve her long goal of joining her family in death.

With Sony’s rerelease each of the Spider-Man movies, we turn back to the clock two decades to 2004 and the film that set the standard for a live-action Spider-Man movie which swings back into theaters this Monday. Returning all the notable stars from the first film (including both Willem Dafoe and Cliff Robertson in a pair of questionable cameos), the sequel focuses on the toll Spider-Man has caused on Peter Parker‘s (Tobey Maguire) life.

Throwback Tuesday takes us back nearly 60 years to John D. MacDonald‘s second Travis McGee novel. While doing a bit of sleuthing for an old army buddy, the salvage consultant will get into a case which he will lose himself both in the arms of a beautiful young woman and the grips of a dark conspiracy. Out of his element, and working in the big city, McGee looks into money left behind to Mike’s younger sister Nina after the death of her fiancé. There’s no rational explanation for the large sum of money and Nina fears what he might have gotten involved in.

My favorite moments of Ultimate Spider-Man #3 center around the interactions between Peter Parker and his daughter May who is the only one who knows her father’s secret. We get the pair working to keep the secret from Mary Jane and then May helping her father find the perfect look for this universe’s Spider-Man. We also get a fun little character beat with Peter discussing Spider-Man with Ben and Jonah, sticking up for the city’s new hero.
