Season One of Covert Affairs is done. The season finale “When the Levee Breaks” tied-up a few loose ends, including the Anne/Ben relationship (hopefully for good). I liked this first season, especially the episodes that didn’t get hijacked by Anne’s lost love, and am happy it got renewed for a second season beginning next summer. Take a look at the finale below with a few more of my thoughts (*SPOILERS* included) after the jump.

The American (and some very beautiful women)

  • Title: The American
  • IMDb: link

Is there anything we won’t forgive George Clooney on-screen? Con man, thief, lawyer, killer – it seems his charm can overcome just about any handicap the script attempts to throw at his character. And that’s why he’s the perfect choice for a role just like this, especially when you surround him with such beautiful women.

In his latest foray into cinema Clooney stars as an assassin chased from the warmth of a beautiful woman (Irina Björklund) and warm fireplace in Sweden. Retreating to the Italian countryside he attempts to lay low while accepting a job creating a custom made rifle for one beautiful woman (Thekla Reuten) as he throws his passions into the arms of another beautiful woman, a local prostitute named Clara (Violante Placido). (Did I mention this film includes beautiful women?)

The American is an art film turned thriller. Some might be put-off by it’s slow pace, including long stretches between action scenes, and unwillingness to force the action (at least early on), but they’d be missing the point.

Batman #702

batman-702-coverThe days leading up to Batman’s “death” are finally explored.

See, if you wait long enough Grant Morrison will give you an explanation. Maybe not a great explanation, but at least something. You only need to needlessly wait months until the story in question is long over and it doesn’t really matter anymore.

As it stands the story is a solid one, and downright linear for a Morrison tale, but the real question behind this “Missing Chapter” of Batman R.I.P. is where the hell has it been for all these months?

There are also a couple of really good lines describing Superman, his abilities, and his larger world, from Batman’s point of view. Better late than never, and worth a look.

Uncanny X-Men #526

uncanny-x-men-526-coverFamily is the common thread in two separate stories presented in this post-Second Coming issue. In the first Hope travels to Alaska in hopes to learn about her birth parents. Her journey doesn’t go quite as planned, but the experience does help fill-in some of her questions.

In the second story Magneto is shocked to learn of the existence of two mutants (Speed and Wiccan) who might, or might not, be his grandchildren. Warned to stay away by both Cyclops and Wolverine, Magneto agrees to give the children distance…but this is the Master of Magnetism we’re talking about. Anyone want to take odds how long he keeps that promise?

Other than the team saving a young woman dealing with her new-found mutation there’s little action here, but that doesn’t mean it’s not worth a read. On their own neither story is strong enough, but as two similar personal tales told together we’re given an issue that stands out for its emotion rather than bloodshed. Definitely worth a look.

[Marvel $3.99]

Time Masters: Vanishing Point #1

time-masters-vanshing-point-1-coverAs the cover tells us: “The Search for Bruce Wayne Begins!” (Actually, the search began two-and-a-half months ago with The Search for Bruce Wayne #1, but that’s neither here nor there.) Booster Gold, Superman, Green Lantern, and Rip Hunter will attempt to find Batman before he can cause irreperable harm to the timestream.

For the first time we’re given a reason (an analogy to a healthy body and a virus) why Bruce Wayne’s travel through time isn’t a good thing. It’s not the best rationale for the problem of why time seems to be unraveling, but at least we’re finally given one. I guess it will have to do.

I actually enjoyed this issue more than I have so far with The Return of Bruce Wayne. The perspective shifting to the group searching for Wayne instead of somewhat bewildered Batman (three issues in, it’s still unclear exactly how much of his real life the Dark Knight remembers) makes the quest more interesting.
