X-Men '97 - Bright Eyes

“Bright Eyes” is an odd episode. On one hand seeing an out-of-control Rogue (Lenore Zann) our for revenge provides some great action (certainly the biggest strength of the series) and we also get the other X-Men attending Gabmit‘s (A.J. LoCascio) funeral allowing them some closure. The episode is designed to highlight Rogue, and it does that extremely well both in how powerful she is as a character and how her grief and anger will lead her down a dark path which could cost the X-Men everything.

The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes - The Crooked Man

Sherlock Saturday takes us back to 221 B Baker Street and the Granada Television’s faithful adaptations of the adventures of Sherlock Holmes. “The Crooked Man” is an interesting episode for a couple of reasons. The entire episode, except for the epilogue, take place outside of Baker Street. Also, it becomes a case in search of murder that reveals that no murder actually occurred. Sherlock Holmes (Jeremy Brett) and Watson (David Burke) are hired to look into the death of Colonel James Barclay (Denys Hawthorne) whose body was discovered along with that of his uncurious wife Nancy (Lisa Daniely) in a locked room after an argument.

Jack Ryan 5-Film Collection

All five feature-length Jack Ryan movies are collected featuring the heroic actions of Tom Clancy’s thinking man’s hero, a CIA analyst turned action star, saving the world. The best of the bunch remains the first. The Hunt for Red October stars Alec Baldwin as the only man who correctly guesses the true intentions of a Soviet captain (Sean Connery) stealing an untrackable nuclear submarine with plans to defect. Not only is it the best story of this collection but director John McTiernan ratches up the tension to great effect making the most of both his stars.

Cobra Commander #4

It’s fun seeing the various pieces introduced and connected in this Cobra prequel series for the shared Energon Universe. In Cobra Commander #4, Cobra Commander finds a scientist who has already started unlocking the vast power of Energon. Meanwhile Nemesis Enforcer takes care of any fight the Dreadnoks have left. This then leads to the expected confrontation between the Commander and Nemesis Enforcer, although there is a twist with the soldier from Cobra-La betraying the Commander rather than other way around.

The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare

A (quite obviously) exaggerated version of what occurred during WWII, The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare gives us Henry Cavill as the rough-and-ready Major Gus March-Phillipps chosen to lead a suicide mission in neutral Spanish territory on a mission designed to relinquish Nazi U-boat control of the Atlantic Ocean. There’s something quite fun about Cavill playing the man who most believe Ian Fleming modeled James Bond after even if the actor never gets a chance to play 007.
