Invincible - This Must Come as a Shock

“This Must Come as a Shock” picks up with Mark (Steven Yeun) recovering from the battle against the Viltrumites and helping the Thraxans before returning to home with his half-brother. We get some awkward reunions with his mother, Amber (Zazie Beetz), and others which will be expanded on in the next episode as events are put in hold to deal with an invading ship from Mars full of Sequids. Mark joins Eve (Gillian Jacobs) for a fight in space while the leftover Guardians Rex (Jason Mantzoukas), Kate (Malese Jow), and Rae (Grey Griffin) deal with the Lizard League breaking into a nuclear facility on Earth.

Kill All Immortals #1

The first issue of Kill All Immortals introduces us to the Asvald family. It turns out there’s more to the family than simply the notoriety of their billions or the whispers of the violence used to procure and keep their wealth. Descended from  Erik the Red, the family of Vikings is immortal, bloodthirsty, and very, very dangerous (especially when their secrets are in danger of being exposed).

Wizards of Waverly Place - First Kiss

Wayback Wednesday takes us back to a family of wizards living in Waverly Place. Lucy Hale guest-stars in “First Kiss” as Justin‘s (David Henrie) new girlfriend Miranda who he’s too shy to kiss. As with the first episode of the series, as spell used unwisely will play into the proceedings when Alex (Selena Gomez) keeps turning back time to give her brother the opportunity to get the kiss right. Sitcom shenanigans are everywhere in the various ways the kiss goes wrong and in the episode’s B-plot which involves Max‘s (Jake T. Austin) crazy sandwich creation catching on with a rep for the NY Mets only to have the rebooted time ruin any chance of it becoming the official sandwich for the baseball team.

Grendel: Devils Crucible – Defiance #1

Grendel: Devils Crucible - Defiance #1

I have a confession to make. I love Hunter Rose. The original Grendel ranks as one of my favorite comic characters of all time. And while Matt Wagner has taken some interesting paths in exploring various later iterations of the character, the further you get from the original the more my interest wanes. The new series, Grendel: Devils Crucible – Defiance, focuses on the last of the Grendels: Grendel-Prime. Returning to Earth after centuries in space, the paladin finds a stark world of haves and have-nots with most tech horded by Necro Lords leaving others to roam the wilderness in a steam-punk-ish society.

My Adventures with Superman - The Death of Clark Kent

Well, if you can’t come up with a good villain you can always turn Superman (Jack Quaid) into the villain, I guess. As Kara (Kiana Madeira)  helps Lois (Alice Lee) and Jimmy (Ishmel Sahid) sneak aboard the ship, Brainiac (Michael Emerson) works on Clark’s psyche finding a weakness in the recent disappointments concerning his friends and exploiting them. The episode ends with Brainiac now fully in control of Superman’s body laying the foundation for Lex Luthor (Max Mittelman) and Amanda Waller‘s (Debra Wilson) fears to come to pass with an invasion of Earth by “Superman.”
