The Old Man - XI

Episode “XI” feels a bit as if multiple episodes have been condensed into one due to time constraints. We get the conclusion of Dan Chase (Jeff Bridges) and Harold Harper’s (John Lithgow) time in Afghanistan, Angela (Alia Shawkat) choosing to stay and the death of her father, the return of Zoe (Amy Brenneman), Dan and Harold confronting Morgan Bote (Joel Grey), who never got developed as much as I would have liked, and also his murder. It’s an insane amount to somehow fit together in one episode, but it does allow the story to finish on another cliffhanger with Angela’s best chance now dead by the minions of Suleyman Pavlovich (Rade Serbedzija) who has overtaken both Hamzad (Navid Negahban) and Bote as our true villain (at least for now).

Murder in a Small Town - The Suspect

Sometimes you get more than you expect, and that was the case for me in sitting down to watch the opening episode of Murder in a Small Town which comes off a bit more like a TV-movie than the first episode of a series. Into the sleepy coastal town of Gibsons, British Columbia, we get a couple of newcomers in Chief of Police Karl Alberg (Rossif Sutherland) and the even more recently arrived Corporal Edwina Yen (Mya Lowe). The notable members of the police force are rounded out by the notably less-talented Sergeant Sid Sokolowski (Aaron Douglas). And, as the title of the show suggests, into the sleepy town comes murder.

Supreme #2

Supreme Saturday takes us back to the early 90s. Published three years before Kingdom Come, Supreme #2 focuses on Supreme dealing with some unfinished business after his return to Earth (which he doesn’t believe has improved during his absence). Heading straight to the prison to murder the arch-nemesis who killed his friends and family, and still takes delight and pleasure in his actions, Supreme is held at bay by Heavy Mettle.

Darth Vader #50

The volume concludes, wrapping up the Schism Imperial arc with Vader taking the power for himself and standing against the Emperor only for his master to offer one more lesson. Vader’s return to the fold wraps up the main storyline with various epilogues catching up with other characters including Vader taking out his wrath on Ochi and the reveal that the Schism was all a bit of theater for the Emperor to toy with his apprentice.

Superman #18

The Absolute Power Tie-in offers the fun pairing of Superman and Zatanna making a deal with Neron for a magical map that will allow the heroes to travel through the shadows avoiding Amanda Waller and her forces. For some reason the pair end up at the House of Heroes adding another super-hero to their ranks and briefly finding Konfusion (the Earth-3 amalgamation of Superman, Batman, and Green Lantern). We also get a separate thread of Lois and friends searching for her husband which eventually connects to the main story.
