Sherlock Sunday takes us back to 40s radio and murder. Premiering on January 28, 1946 as part of The New Adventures of Sherlock Holmes radio program, Sherlock Holmes (Basil Rathbone) is put in the unlikely situation of being hired by a potential murderer to prove his guilt. Inspired by Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, the actor playing the lead role in the musical is being gaslit to believe he has committed murders at night. Quickly dismissing the “evidence” of nightly crimes, Holmes is not quick enough to save his client’s life, but the world’s greatest detective does bring the killer to justice by taking the victim’s place upon the stage.
