Your nostalgia for classic Looney Tunes cartoons may influence your enjoyment in The Day The Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie. Warner Bros., who has owned the various properties since the 1940s, hasn’t had the best luck in adapting characters from the animated shorts into full features over the years. The latest, and first (not counting the Space Jam sequel) in over 20 years, casts Daffy Duck and Porky Pig (both voiced by Eric Bauza) as brothers out to save their home from threats such as the H.O.A. and aliens. Honestly, the H.O.A. is the scarier of the two antagonists (although the aliens allow for things to get quite wacky over the second-half of the film).
The film has its ups and downs straining at times to keep the laughs coming over the full 91-minutes. However, there are certainly highlights such as the pair struggling to get work (and repeatedly getting fired) from every job they can find before settling down at a bubblegum factory only for Daffy to learn it has been invaded by aliens (a fact he fails to get Porky to believe). However, with the Earth at stake (and a few twists thrown in along the way), the pair of classic characters will rise to the occasion with the help of Petunia Pig (Candi Milo).
The choice to go with Daffy and Porky, rather than Bugs, turns out to be a good decision. Much of the humor comes from the odd-couple pairing of the two, and Daffy’s chaotic nature which plays well against Porky’s straight man routine. Even if there are some lulls, there’s care taken with the the characters and certainly enough here for fans to enjoy some nostalgic fun with some old friends.
