Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga

Mad Max: Fury Road was one of the most kinetic, edge-of-your-seat, visually bonkers popcorn movies of the past decade. Exploring the origins of the film’s breakout star (played in Fury Road by Charlize Theron), Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is… largely fine. More structured, less zany, and with far fewer surprises, Furiosa still provides plenty of crazy stunts and action against the backdrop of the dystopian world, and Anya Taylor-Joy, taking over the Furiosa role, proves she can carry a film with minimal dialogue.

Like most sequels, Furiosa isn’t as good as the previous film. Furiosa as a young girl limits much of the first-half of the film preventing George Miller from going bonkers early, and even once it hits full stride it’s still lagging well behind Fury Road. While Taylor-Joy is capable as our hero, I was less interested in the campiness of Chris Hemsworth as Furiosa’s self-destructive nemesis Dementus.

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is a fun couple of hours that never quite taps into the zeitgeist of the film which introduced the character this one is intent on further exploring without, you know, ever letting her speak. Fans should enjoy themselves, but if I’m ever in the mood to revisit this world I’m far more likely to see out Fury Road than Furiosa in the future.
