- Title: Bad Boys II

Like most action sequels, Bad Boys II is bigger and louder than the first film. However, it’s not necessarily any better. On one hand, the sequel spends a bit more time on the script than the original actually creating reasons for the constant bickering between Will Smith and Martin Lawrence and the crazy antics and action. On the other hand, things inevitably get out of control in the bloated script with a final act that more resembles Commando that any sort of believable police story.
The second film adds Gabrielle Union as Marcus’ younger sister and Mike’s new girl of the moment. She’s also working undercover for the DEA attempting to take down the largest importer of ecstasy in the country (Jordi Mollà) who is consolidating his power and killing his rivals. Union is a nice addition to the cast, and Syd is capable up until the point that she’s not and will need to be saved by our heroes in a ridonculous final act.
As an action film, Bad Boys II is more memorable than the first film. It’s got larger (and more ridiculous) stunts, actions, exlosions, and car chases. That said, the issues with the first film are all still present, and at nearly 150 minutes the film is at least a full hour too long, often having trouble deciding when things should be taken seriously and when they should just be over-the-top nonsense resulting in a tonal mishmash of mediocrity.
