Those unfamiliar with Keith Giffen’s work on Justice League International might not get the same kick out of Giffen giving his spin to the Justice League Unlimited universe as I did, but that just means you’ve got some back issues to get a hold of.
The story, entitled “Wannabes,” centers around Booster Gold and Blue Beetle‘s attempts to join the Justice League and cash in on fame and wealth.
Unfortunately the pair’s efforts to help the League take down a team of baddies (attempting to destroy a building owned by Maxwell Lord Enterprises) ends badly for the two-some as their help only allow the criminals to escape.
It’s so much fun to see Giffen tackle these characters again in this type of situation. I’m only sorry none of the other JLI show up to join the fun.
Booster and Beetle’s conversations at the beginning and end of the issue are alone worth picking this up, but there’s also quite a bit of fun mixed in with Batman and Wonder Woman‘s reaction to the pair and their dreams of wealth and glory.
Giffen returns his deft touch to these characters and once again provides his own slanted take on what a super-hero can be in the DCU. Though short, this is a good combination of the JLI and of Cartoon Network’s Justice League. I just wish it was more than one issue.
