If you don’t believe a comic can move you to tears, let me offer you The Human Target #12. The final issue of The Human Target deals with the aftermath. The heart-wrenching, painful, disturbing, yet beautiful aftermath of the death of Christopher Chance. There’s no last-minute save for our hero. Christopher Chance dies. While some of comic attempts to wrap-up various JLI threads still hanging out there, the main focus is on Ice and dealing with the loss of the man she inadvertently killed and fell in love with all in twelve days.
Eventually we see the pair’s final night together, but this is really about what comes after. The twelve-issue maxi-series concludes with some memorable panels from artist Greg Smallwood and bittersweet humor from writer Tom King who together provided my favorite comic run in several years. It’s a fitting end that still leaves you wanting, yearning, for more, but I’m tremendously grateful for what we were given.
