Bringing the characters from the short-run 60s cartoon into the present, Space Ghost #1 gives the first meeting between the vigilante space cop Space Ghost and the young siblings Jace and Jan whose home is attacked, and whose father is killed, by space pirates whose numbers include fan-favorite Brak (albeit without his nasally charm). Reimagined with a more serious tone than the original series, Space Ghost gets a bit of the early days Batman treatment jumping out of the shadows with the evil-doers surprised that he actually exists and not sure what to make of him.
We don’t learn much about what the kids’ father was working on, other than it relates to the chimp Blip, but events do force Jace and Jan to accept the help of Space Ghost who, despite frightening them as much as the pirates, is the least murdery stranger they meet over the kick-off comic’s twenty-some pages. Next up, Ghost Planet, and I’ll stick around at least one more issue to see where that leads.
