- Title: Astro City #38
- Comic Vine: link
- Writer: Kurt Busiek
- Artist: Brent Anderson
A companion piece to Astro City #37, the latest issue of Astro City remains in the Roaring Twenties. The musical theme remains as well, but while several other heroes are mentioned, the comic’s central focus is on Jazzbaby. Listening to the music of the city, Jazzbaby is able to find, and anticipate, trouble.
The main threat in Astro City #38 comes in an underground speakeasy where a villain known as Destine plans on unlocking the power of the mystical Star of Lahkimpur and opening a door to the netherworld. In his way are the equally strange serpent cult, Jazzbaby, and a host of other heroes that arrive to join the fray including the Cloak of Night and the Five Enemies.
Only tied to the previous issue through it theme of music and how it connects the world, Astro City #38 may not be as strong an issue but there’s plenty here to enjoy including both the musical theme which is further developed, the issue’s big action sequence, and Jazzbaby herself. Worth a look.
