Smallville - Zero

Superman Saturday takes us back to Smallville, Kansas. Teased multiple times over the show’s First Season leading up to the episode, “Zero” delves into Lex Luthor‘s (Michael Rosenbaum) bad boy days in Metropolis before being relocated to Smallville by his father. Secrets of the past haunting a character also bleed over into the episode’s B-story as a school assignment leads to Chloe (Allison Mack) poking around in the Kents’ adoption of Clark (Tom Welling). Just as Lex asks Clark to leave his past alone, Clark finds himself asking the same of Chloe.

Only Murders in the Building - Adaptation / Blow-Up

More suspects are crossed of the list. After quickly disposing of Bev (Molly Shannon), who ended the previous episode holding the podcasters at gun point, Charles (Steve Martin), Oliver (Martin Short), and Mabel (Selena Gomez) turn their attention to the movie looking for new suspects. In “Adaptation” they also dismiss the screenwriter (Jin Ha) who was never much of a suspect but through that interaction they begin to take a closer look at the Brothers Sisters (Catherine Cohen and Siena Werber) who they discover have a connection to one of the Westies and the mysterious Dudenoff (Griffin Dunne).

The Old Man - XI

Episode “XI” feels a bit as if multiple episodes have been condensed into one due to time constraints. We get the conclusion of Dan Chase (Jeff Bridges) and Harold Harper’s (John Lithgow) time in Afghanistan, Angela (Alia Shawkat) choosing to stay and the death of her father, the return of Zoe (Amy Brenneman), Dan and Harold confronting Morgan Bote (Joel Grey), who never got developed as much as I would have liked, and also his murder. It’s an insane amount to somehow fit together in one episode, but it does allow the story to finish on another cliffhanger with Angela’s best chance now dead by the minions of Suleyman Pavlovich (Rade Serbedzija) who has overtaken both Hamzad (Navid Negahban) and Bote as our true villain (at least for now).

Murder in a Small Town - The Suspect

Sometimes you get more than you expect, and that was the case for me in sitting down to watch the opening episode of Murder in a Small Town which comes off a bit more like a TV-movie than the first episode of a series. Into the sleepy coastal town of Gibsons, British Columbia, we get a couple of newcomers in Chief of Police Karl Alberg (Rossif Sutherland) and the even more recently arrived Corporal Edwina Yen (Mya Lowe). The notable members of the police force are rounded out by the notably less-talented Sergeant Sid Sokolowski (Aaron Douglas). And, as the title of the show suggests, into the sleepy town comes murder.

Doctor Odyssey - Pilot

Joshua Jackson stars as Dr. Max Bankman who joins the luxury cruise ship The Odyssey for his first trip as the ship’s new doctor. The “Pilot” sets up the basics of the series, introducing us to key members of the crew including its Captain (Don Johnson), and Max’s two nurses (Phillipa Soo and Sean Teale) along with setting up the basic setup for the show with Max showing off his skills to his new subordinates and them showing him a few things about the unique environment aboard a cruise ship. That and the various quirky health issues of the week set what is likely going to be the template for the series.
