The Top Ten Movies of 2016 (so far)

2016 is now half over which means it’s time to look back at the best of what we’ve seen released so far this year. The list includes four super-hero films, a few unrepentant killers, three animated movies, five sequels, one Oscar winner, and two appearances from the Dark Knight Detective (although not from his disappointing big-screen battle with the Big Blue Boy Scout). So, what made the list? Here are the Best Movies of 2016 so far…

Who’s That Girl – Lesley-Ann Brandt

Lesley-Ann BrandtAlways the bridesmaid, never the bride. True, she might not grab the starring role, but she finds a way to make an immediate and lasting impression whether in only a single scene we can’t quite forget where she effortlessly steals the spotlight before fading back into anonymity or popping up in movies and television over the years here and there, almost always reminding us that we have seen her before even if we can’t quite remember where. Even if we can’t quite think her name we immediately recognize her face and search furiously through our brains to remember where we have seen “that girl” before.

Top Ten Reasons the Star Wars Prequels Don't Suck

No one is arguing they are as good as the originals. At least no one sane. That said, just because Episodes I, II & III aren’t as good as some of the best sci-fi/fantasy ever captured on film that doesn’t mean they necessarily suck. Sure there’s Jar-Jar, that awful speech about sand, the video game level that masquerades as the climax of Attack of the Clones, several questionable casting decisions, and a memorable “No” might all be damning evidence to the contrary.

That, however, is not what this list is about. If you can get beyond comparing the films to the originals there’s actually quite a lot going on in the three Star Wars prequels that is actually pretty damn cool. Don’t believe me? Need to be convinced? Okay, here are ten reasons why the Star Wars Prequels Don’t Suck (and I’m not even counting my longtime crush Keira Knightley as one of them).

Top Ten Super-Hero Movies (Before They Were Cool)

Believe it or not there was a time not so long ago where it wasn’t common to have super-heroes ruling the box office. Back in the day comic fans were lucky to get a comic movie every few years let alone multiple movies released all in the same summer. Long before Marvel Studios began building their Marvel Cinematic Universe and Christopher Nolan rebooted his Dark Knight super-heroes still found their way to the silver screen, albeit in smaller numbers. Imbued with a certain cheesy charm that today’s far gritter heroes might scoff at, these movies give us heroes in the true meaning of the word. Released between the period of 1940 and 1996, here are the Top Ten Super-Hero Movies (Before They Were Cool).
