Spooky Saturday takes us back to 2005’s Constantine starring Keanu Reeves as the chain-smoking asshole needed to save the world. Earning mixed reaction from critics, the film scored big at the box office and has built up an even larger cult following over the past two decades leading to a the possible resurrection of a potential sequel in the near future.

Based on real events, Anna Kendrick‘s directorial debut splits its focus between serial killer Rodney Alcala (Daniel Zovatto) and struggling actress Cheryl Bradshaw (Kendrick) whose lives intersect as contestants on The Dating Game. I like all the pieces here, as the script by Ian McDonald explores 70s misogyny across both stories as Bradshaw makes compromises to further her career and McDonald targets young woman to add to his list of victims. My only complaint with the film is how it is put together.

Removing Venom out of Spider-Man‘s universe and introducing him on his own as the main character of a horror flick was an odd choice. Originally introduced in the comics as a nemesis for Spider-Man, in recent years the character has evolved into something of an anti-hero given his popularity. It’s that version Sony and director Ruben Fleischer attempted to capture in 2018 film as an alien symbiote from across the stars bonds itself to a loser in need of redemption. Together, they will save the world.

Joining the their friend Rochelle (Isabella Egizi), a social media influencer bride, in Italy, Kelsey (Diana Gardner) and Blake (Nathaniel Ansbach) find themselves drawn into the world of a vampire (Fabián Castro) in whose house the bachelorette weekend is taking place. Drawn to Kelsey because she reminds him of his lost love, Victor (Castro) begins gaslighting the other women and seducing Kelsey while Blake, your typical gay best friend, is recruited by a cute local (Riccardo Angelini) to help stop the vampire.

Scary Sunday takes us back to an unlikely meeting of Hollywood stars. Hoping to use the studio’s most popular stars to rekindle interest in their monster properties, Universal brought the comedic duo into the world of Dracula (Béla Lugosi), Frankenstein’s Monster (Glenn Strange), and the Wolf Man (Lon Chaney Jr.) bringing back the actors who had made the monsters popular. Despite concerns about the script from everyone involved, and the less than cordial relationship between Abbot and Costello, the film became one of Universal’s biggest hits leading to further misadventures of the duo with the Universal Monsters.
