Methinks he doth protest too much. In an episode where Walter (Elyes Gabel) scoffs at the need for people to keep souvenirs and remembrances of their loved ones, he and his team head into Bosnia with a covert squad to recover stealth tech (for the U.S. Government) and the remains of the plane’s pilot (for the soldier’s widow and child). The B-story introduces Camille Guaty as Walter’s sister Megan who remains at Scorpion headquarters with Sylvester (Ari Stidham) while the other members of the team risk their lives overseas. The B-story offers a bit more insight into the team for audiences while also demonstrating to both Megan and the show’s viewers that Walter is far more nostalgic than he has ever let on.
Dumping the likes of Walter, Happy (Jadyn Wong), and Toby (Eddie Kaye Thomas) in the middle of Bosnia on a covert mission stretches the show’s already thin relationship with believable premises to get the group into trouble. Not surprisngly, early tension between Walter’s team and the soldiers leads to friction until the geniuses prove their worth to not only keeping the mission going but saving the life of its commander (Jake McLaughlin).
In an episode that pushes Happy and Toby to admit their feelings (but only sort of), “Talismans” also gives Sylvester more to do than simply relay information over the computer. The introduction of Megan works well, both in continuing to flesh out the main character and also in her interactions with Sylvester. I’d like to see much more of that pair together. Paige‘s (Katharine McPhee) own family issues are put on hold this week but she does manage to keep the soldiers from shooting her prickly friends.
