Over the objections of Agent Gallo (Robert Patrick), Walter (Elyes Gabel) books the team a private job in Las Vegas to discover why a casino is loosing money. Discovering the culprit is nothing nefarious, but merely a single dealer (Chris Mulkey) who is unintentionally costing the casino money because of his small hands, the team takes a victory lap on the casino floor when everything goes straight to hell.
Someone (Alicia Lagano) uses the blindspot Walter created to investigate the dealer in more detail to make off with $10 million of the casino’s money. Given the fact that Walter was the one who upgraded their security network the local police believe he (and possibly his entire team) was in on the robbery. Stuck in jail, Walter is forced to rely on the rest of the team to bail him out and/or prove his innocence, neither of which is easy without his steady hand guiding the ship.
With Walter behind bars, “Shorthanded” showcases just how much the team relies on his leadership and allows Paige (Katharine McPhee) to step-in and help Sylvester (Ari Stidham), Toby (Eddie Kaye Thomas), and Happy (Jadyn Wong) to keep it together for an ill advise casino break-in that nearly gets Toby killed. The storyline allows the episode to highlight the other members of the team, both their strengths and weaknesses, but it still relies on Walter to break out of jail himself to save not only his good name and the company he’s invested everything in but also the lives of every member of his team.
