When a shipment of priceless art is stolen right from under their noses Shawn (James Roday) calls in an expert to help solve the case – Pierre Despereaux (Cary Elwes). Needless to say Gus (Dulé Hill) is slightly less enthused with trusting the art thief to recover the missing treasures than his best friend, especially as he’s still not satisfied with Shawn’s explanation about the engagement ring he’s carrying around for Juliet (Maggie Lawson).

The three set out to find the theives only to discover the woman in distress (Mädchen Amick) who provided the momentary distraction for the heist to occur is actually the leader of the gang and a world renown art thief. Even more puzzling is the fact the thieves are ignoring the pricier items in the robbery and spending all their time studying a crappy, rusty old dagger which, it turns out, might be a clue to the location of an even more expensive treasure.

After Despereaux apparently dies while helping Shawn and Gus, the psychic detective vows to continue the treasure hunt and not allow the woman who killed “the coolest man on earth” to claim the mythical treasure of the Core Collection for herself. To do so Shawn and Gus take a tour of a wealthy man’s estate led by the world’s bitchiest tour guide (Lindsey Stoddart) as Shawn plunges a 1920’s key/dagger into every opening he can find. And, yes, it’s as ridiculous (i.e. awesome) as it sounds.

A strong first episode back, “Indiana Shawn and the Temple of the Kinda Crappy, Rusty Old Dagger” returns one of the show’s most amusing recurring characters, gives us a fun treasure hunt – Psych-style – and also finds a way to weave Shawn’s reluctance to deal with death into the episode’s main story. And the last final twists weren’t too shabby either. Well done.
