- Title: Glee – Pot O’ Gold

After a month hiatus Glee returns with several storylines and five musical numbers. Brittany (Heather Morris) and Finn (Cory Monteith) befriend and Irish exchange student named Rory Flanagan (Damian McGinty) who the cheerleader is convinced is a leprechaun. The glee club faces more defections as the size of Shelby’s (Idina Menzel) all-girl show choir continues to grow. Sue’s (Jane Lynch) attempt to shut down the musical by coming out against it on the air has an unforeseen consequence. And Quinn (Dianna Agron) starts to play dirty in her attempt to get her baby daughter back.
Mercedes (Amber Riley) is successful in luring Brittany and Santana (Naya Rivera) away from New Directions and jointing and Sugar (Vanessa Lengies) as part of Shelby’s new group which is christened the Troubletones. And I’ve got to admit the group has a little style, showmanship, and sass the New Directions has been lacking for awhile now when they perform their first number: Christina Aguilera‘s Candyman.”
Burt Hummel (Mike O’Malley) agrees to run against on Sue in the upcoming Congressional election. The story works well for two reasons. First, Burt’s reasons for running fit his character perfectly. And second, this gives Sue a new enemy allowing the glee club a brief respite from her insanity.
In other storylines Brittany and Santana go on a real date, Brittany learns the sad truth that leprechauns aren’t real, the glee club adds a new member, and Puck gets extra chummy with his daughter’s stepmother. It’s the last of these that will likely have the biggest fallout in weeks to come.
Even if the show make you wait nearly 20 minutes for the first song it does include five numbers including two by the show’s newest member. Aside from “Candyman,” Rory performs “Bein’ Green” and “Take Care of Yourself,” (the second works better than the first), in an attempt to raise their spirits Blaine (Darren Criss) leads the glee club in Katy Perry’s “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.),” and Puck performs Foreigner‘s “Waiting for a Girl Like You” tohis daughter Beth.
The show was a little weak in terms of great moments or performances, but it does spend some necessary time laying the ground for a pair of big storylines (the Troubletones and Hummel vs. Sue) which should pay off for weeks to come. As to the team’s newest member, if they pull back on the Irish slant (“Bein’ Green,” really?) I think he could make an interesting addition to the show.
