Throwback Tuesday takes us back to Scooby Doo, Where Are You! for another mystery involving some meddling kids and their talking dog. In a twist, a ghost finds the gang in “Nowhere to Hyde” when the Ghost of Mr. Hyde (John Stephenson) hides in the back of the Mystery Machine after a jewel robbery. Once discovered, the ghost escapes and Mystery, Inc. chases him to a spooky house in the middle of nowhere where they find a scientist (Stephenson) suffering from blackouts and his unusual housekeeper Helga (Susan Stewart). While it’s unclear how exactly Hyde is a ghost, the design of the monster of the week is a lot of fun.
“Nowhere to Hyde” is notable for a few reasons including playing on yet another classic monster in Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. It marks the first episode where Heather North replaces Stefanianna Christopherson as the voice of Daphne. The clues the gang discover initially all seem to point to Helga, but she turns out to be a red herring as Jekyll purposely leaves clues to shift suspicion away from himself and on to his housekeeper (was that his purpose in luring the gang to his home?). The first episode of the show’s Second Season, it is also the first to feature a chase montage set to a pop song (this one being “Recipe for My Love“). And, in the closing moments, it features the entire gang dressing up as Mr. Hyde to frighten the villain and capture him.
