- Title: Supergirl – Crisis on Infinite Earths: Part One

Supergirl kicks off the crossover The CW has been building towards for years as an anti-matter wave is approaching all Earths, threatening to wipe out all of existence. The Monitor (LaMonica Garrett) pulls heroes from various locations, bringing them to Supergirl‘s Earth-38 to make a stand. While the show’s current storyline’s are mentioned, most notably Lena (Katie McGrath) villain turn, the focus is on Crisis as all hands are on deck (even Lena) to find a way to evacuate the Earth should Supergirl (Melissa Benoist), Green Arrow (Stephen Amell), White Canary (Caity Lotz), the Atom (Brandon Routh), Superman (Tyler Hoechlin), Mia (Katherine McNamara), Batwoman (Ruby Rose), and the Flash (Grant Gustin) fail.
The writers don’t wait to showcase the destructive force of the Crisis and the looming Anti-Monitor. In the first episode alone several worlds fall, and one notable hero. Along with the destruction of Earth-38, Earth-89, Earth-66, Earth-9, and Earth-X are all destroyed by the wave. “Part One” also offers glimpses into several Earths including Earth-16’s Oliver Queen, a few of the Titans, and Burt Ward makes a brief cameo on the doomed Earth-66 (Holy Nostalgia Batman!). With follow-up episodes the next two nights (and the concluding episodes after the new year), there are plenty of new heroes to introduce, but “Part One” will be remembered for the death of Oliver Queen who goes out in trademark style by fighting until the end to provide time for the people of Earth-38 to evacuate. While Amell’s death was a forgone conclusion, the destruction of Argo and Supergirl‘s world both raise some questions about how much change will be in store for the various shows once Crisis ends and the dust clears.
While the Arrowverse team has made many changes in order to fit Crisis into its storyline, “Part One” does play to the comic in a few ways as it works in the shadow demons and the Monitor’s tower into the story along with revealing what role his version of Harrison Wells (Tom Cavanagh) is to play in the larger story as Pariah. While the show hasn’t always played the largest role in the various crossovers, Supergirl is given a meaty share of plot here. The episode’s best scene is one of its quietest, involving the reunion of Supergirl and Superman who have now just learned their fellow Kryptonians are all dead (again) and that Clark’s son is lost in the Multiverse. While the later is wrapped-up very quickly, the sequence reminds us just how human these two characters are heading into a number of episodes where they will be forced to push their powers to the limit.
Great kickoff episode
