- Title: Legends of Tomorrow – Pilot, Part 2

The second-half of the Pilot episode of Legends of Tomorrow sends the group into the 1970s in search of Vandal Savage (Casper Crump). Ignoring the words of caution from Rip Hunter (Arthur Darvill), who has already lied to them once, the time-travelers attempt to take out Savage on their own… with disastrous results. Before the close of the episode the team’s number will be trimmed by one but their resolve will be hardened as Savage succeeds in killing off one member of the group only to make the whole that much stronger.
Addressing one of my concerns with the show before ending it’s two-hour premiere, the death of Hawkman (Falk Hentschel) not only trims a bit of the show’s unnecessary fat but also galvanizes the group for the mission to come. While I enjoyed various characters’ reactions to the younger Martin Stein (Graeme McComb), my favorite moment from the episode came during the group’s first battle scene where we finally were allowed to witness the Ray Palmer (Brandon Routh) using the Atom’s trademark abilities of size and mass manipulation. Having the show’s most heroic member also make the biggest blunder (leaving advanced technology for Savage to find) was not only a smart touch but allowed Legends of Tomorrow to explore one of the many consequences with making changes to the past.
Knowing that time travel will require the group to blend into whatever time they jump into, the episode offers a loose explanation on how those clothes will be provided through the ship. Originally only joining out of self-interest, it appears even Captain Cold (Wentworth Miller) and Heat Wave (Dominic Purcell) have bought into the group’s mission, at least for now. Even with Hawkman’s departure the time ship still feels a bit crowded. I wonder if the show’s writers have any other plans for shake-ups to the group over the course of the season.
