- Title: Once Upon a Time – Best Laid Plans

In an episode that reveals the truth about Snow White (Ginnifer Goodwin) and David‘s (Josh Dallas) big secret and the fate of Maleficent‘s (Kristin Bauer van Straten) child, “Best Laid Plans” also introduces us to the Author (or at least the one trapped in the book – which is an interesting choice to reveal many have played that role over history) and gives the audience an understanding of how and why he came to be trapped inside the story book he was chronicling. Tempted to destroy the page to avoid telling Emma (Jennifer Morrison) the truth, the Charmings eventually decide to come clean about their secrets in a move that all of Storybrooke may come to regret.
With the flashbacks focused on the theft and loss of Maleficent’s child by Snow and Charming to save their own we also get a glimpse of the girl’s name in this reality and the realization that one person in Storybrooke has crossed paths with Lily (Nicole Munoz) which explains why the show keeps bringing up Emma’s old acquaintance. With Regina‘s (Lana Parrilla) cover blown and the Author, who appears far more villain than hero at this point, loosed upon Storybrooke you have to wonder what fate has in store for our heroes (which apparently includes the return of Zelena).
Emma’s knowledge of Lily, and her guilt for what her parents did to Maleficent’s child in her name, will no doubt lead to an interesting conversation between Savior and dragon somewhere down the line. More pressing, however, is how the town will react to the kind of havoc that someone with the ability to rewrite history willy-nilly can create (even if that’s why the wanted him out of the book to begin with). Now that we’ve seen glimpses of Lily as a teenager and baby you have to wonder how long before we see Maleficent’s daughter as an adult and learn just what Emma’s possible dark future may have done to her.
