Howard (Simon Helberg) and Raj (Kunal Nayyar) become obsessed with where Sheldon (Jim Parsons) disappears to every day at 2:45pm as Leonard (Johnny Galecki) deals with his own obsession when Penny (Kaley Cuoco) starts to hang out with a new study partner (Ryan Cartwright).
Raj and Howard break into the secret storage locker the pair follow Sheldon to one afternoon but after discovering only a chalkboard with the number “43” written on it they are no closer to deciphering the scientist’s purposes. Unable to make heads or tails of the number, the pair bug the room but are unprepared for what they find when Sheldon decides to plays a practical joke at his friends’ expense for spying on him.
Making a complete ass of himself to try and scare off Penny’s new lab partner, Leonard has some groveling to do with his girlfriend. Leonard also gets some consolation from Sheldon’s assistant Alex (Margo Harshman), who obviously has feelings for the oblivious scientist. Later Penny has a few choice words for her jealous and insecure boyfriend – two of which Leonard is completely shocked to hear for the very first time. Focusing on the show’s core members, and giving two memorable moments in Sheldon’s wormhole and Penny’s admission, “The 43 Peculiarity” turns out to be one of the season’s best episodes.
