When we last saw Kate (Sarah Shahi) she was being fired from the firm her father built by her wicked step-mother Lauren (Virginia Williams) in the First Season finale. With Reed & Reed on the verge of collapse not only does she appear to have her job back if she wants it (thanks to her brother’s proxies which give her ownership of half the firm), but she’ll also have to deal with an aggressive new lawyer (Ryan Johnson) Lauren has brought on as a partner.
Kate’s first job back is a mediation between a woman (Andrea Brooks) and her grandfather (John Aylward) and the man’s former employer (and longtime client of Reed & Reed) who knowingly exposed him to harmful chemicals which led to his current illness. Despite Lauren’s insistence that things go smoothly and are settled quickly, Kate is more concerned with making sure the man, who doesn’t want to sue, gets the closure he’s after.
The other major story involves Justin (Michael Trucco) being attacked on his way to sign the final divorce papers which leads not only to some minor celebrity and his announcement to run for District Attorney but also an honest moment with Kate about the state of their relationship which reveals something that causes the mediator literally run away at full speed.
With this first episode back it seems clear the show’s creators are intent to shake things up. The arrival of Ben Grogan (Johnson) should do just that. Justin’s betrayal and new focus, as well as the explosion on Kate’s boat, also seem that Kate’s life is going to get some major changes as well. At least she’s still go Leo (Baron Vaughn) to rely on, because it looks like she may need him this season more than ever.
