Another attempt on his father’s life confirms Sherlock Holmes‘ (Jonny Lee Miller) suspicions that the group responsible is the shadow organization once run by Jamie Moriarty (Natalie Dormer). Although Moriarty does not appear in the episode, in scouring through her possible former lieutenants Holmes and Watson come across mathematics professor Joshua Vikner (Tony Curran) who fits the more classic mold of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s original Moriarty. Without incriminating himself, the man admits to Holmes and Watson his connection to Moriarty and her former organization as the episode offers a pair of scenes for the detective and the villain to discuss the situation in which they find themselves.
In Doyle’s original stories Holmes only returns from the “dead” after he’s successfully dismantled Moriarty’s organization. “The Invisible Hand” forces Holmes to consider the repercussions of cutting of the head of Moriarty’s group but leaving a vacuum for a man like Vikner to fill. When Morland Holmes (John Noble) suggests his son may be responsible for his current predicament he’s not entirely wrong. Despite Vikner confirming that Moriarty’s orders to not harm Holmes and Watson are still in place it appears someone in the organization wants the detectives out of the way. The closing scene of the episode, in which a bomb similar to the one which destroyed Morland’s office is left in the brownstone, sets up next week’s season finale.
